spectra Flashcards
Describe the Bohr model of the atom
- nucleus contains protons and neutrons
- positively charged
- electrons orbiting the nucleus
What is an atoms ground state?
its lowest energy level
What are energy levels?
places in which electrons will orbit the nucleus, at only exact values of energy
What happens when an electron absorbs or drops energy?
absorbs- move to higher energy level
drops-move to a lower energy level
What is the ionisation level?
the electron has zero potential energy so escapes the electrostatic attraction to the nucleus and will be ionised
When is an absorption spectrum produced?
when an electron moves from a lower energy level to a higher one
What are the equations involving energy levels?
E1-E2=hf
E=hf
When is an emission spectrum produced?
when electrons move from a higher energy level to a lower one
What are absorption lines in the spectrum of sunlight evidence for?
the composition of the suns outer atmosphere
