specimen collection (evacuated tube system) Flashcards
two methods of evacuated tube system
Single and multiple draw
Method of using ETS but filling up 1 tube only
Single draw
Using ETS and filling up 2 or more tube
Multiple draw
EVACUATED TUBE SYSTEM MATERIALS
a. Multisample Needle
b. Tube holder/needle adapter
c. Evacuated Tubes
o Both ends are sharp
o The tube end has a rubber cover to prevent
leakage between tubes
- When the tube is inserted in the needle, the rubber will retract exposing the needle where blood will travel from one end of the needle to the other
- One end is connected to the vein and the other is connected to the tube
Multi-Sample Needle Set
o Help place and remove tubes
▪ Two types: Adult Tube Holder and
Pediatric Tube Holder (smaller)
Tube Holder/ Needle Adapter
o Sodalime, Borosilicate glass or plastic
o With different additives or anti-coagulant present
- has vacuum inside
- has expiration dates written on their body
- Has black lines or arrows called as INDICATOR LINE
Evacuated Tubes
that gives the idea until how
much blood is the tube be filled
INDICATOR LINE
- Preserve a specific blood constituent
- Aid in the separation of serum from cell
- Not all additives have the same function,
Tube Additives
Not all additives have the same function, they could be:
- Anticoagulants
- Anti-glycolytic
- Clot activators
- Thixotropic gel separators
o Interrupt the process of coagulation
o EDTA, Citrate, Heparin, Oxalates
Anticoagulants
o Prevents Glycolysis
o Sodium Fluoride
Anti-glycolytic
o Activates clotting factors for blood to clot
Clot activators
o Most of the time called as ‘SST’ or serum
separator tube
o It separates the serum from other blood
components
Thixotropic gel separators
8x (some 6-8, 8-10) inversion
EDTA and Heparin
3-4 x inversion
Citrate
Most common anticoagulants used:
- Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)
- Citrate
- Heparin
- Oxalate
▪ Indicated by a purple stopper
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)
Indicated by a light blue stopper
Citrate
Indicated by a green stopper
Heparin
▪ Indicated by a black stopper
▪ Sometimes black may also indicate
sodium citrate
Oxalate
Anticoagulants with special use
- Acid citrate dextrose
- Citrate phosphate dextrose
- Sodium polyanethol sulfonate (SPS)
Commonly used for blood to be collected
for using in HLA typing
Acid citrate dextrose
Commonly used for blood banking
Citrate phosphate dextrose
Used for blood culture
Sodium polyanethol sulfonate (SPS
Yellow order of draw
Sterile blood culture tubes
Light blue order of draw
Coagulation tubes
Red order of draw
Serum tube/ plain tube
green order of draw
o For blood gas analysis, or to measure other analytes in chemistry section
- Heparin tube
Lavender/Purple
o For hematology
EDTA tube
Gray order of draw
Anti-glycolytic tube/ Fluoride
Order of draw
1- Yellow
2 - Light blue
3 - Red
4 - Green
5 - Lavender/purple
6 - Gray
