Specific Soft Tissue Mobilisations (SSTM) Flashcards
What is a SSTM?
Skin must move with your finger without using lubrication, move as far as the skin moves.
Why use an SSTM? (Pathophysiology behind it)
Alter regeneration of the remodelling phase, this initiates pain relief through the pain gait cycle, there is collagen remodelling and ground substance changes which affects Visco-elastic properties. The aim is to reduce pain and to allow for pain free function.
What is a physiological SSTM?
Self stretch, physio stretch and engage barrier, oscillate using maitland grading or static holds. This should be stretched towards the end range.
What is a deep transverse friction massage
Transverse compressive force is applied to the superior surface of the tissue
What is an accessory SSTM?
Direct pressure, bowing and transverse mobilisations
What is a combined SSTM?
Uses both Physiological and accessory SSTM techniques as they’re combined.
