Species and Taxonomy Flashcards
Define classification
The organisation of living organisms into groups
Define taxonomy
The study if classification
Define species
A group of similar organisms that can breed together to produce fertile offsprings
What do courtship behaviour help animals to achieve
- Recognise members if their own species
- Recognise opposite genders
- Identify a mate capable of breeding
- Form a pair bond
- Synchronise mating
- Stimulates release of gametes
What is the taxon order
. Domain
. Kingdom
. Phylum
. Class
. Order
. Family
. Genus
. Species
Define hierarchy
Groups within groups, no overlap
Define phylogeny
The study of the evolutionary relationships between species
Define phylogenetic group
Evolutionary links/ history / relationships / common ancestors
How can we determine the evolutionary relationships of species
- Comparing the frequency of observable characteristics
- Comparing the base sequence of DNA
- Comparing the base sequence of mRNA
- Amino acid sequence of certain proteins can be compared between different species
Describe DNA hybridisation
Pair two strands of the same gene from two different organisms together. If they are closely related, the sequence of bases will be very simular, so more complementary paring so more H bonds will form. Therefore takes a higher temperature to break these extra bonds
