Speciation Flashcards
What is speciation?
Formation of a new species over a very long period of time?
what does a barrier do?
isolates a large interbreeding population, a gene pool gets split into 2.
types of barriers
geographical - rivers / mountains
ecological - pH
reproductive/ behavioural
what gets added into each sub-population
a different mutation
if mutation is beneficial?
individuals will have a selective advantage
stage 1
a large population of the SAME species is chosen
stage 2
a barrier is added to separate the population
stage 3
a better adapted, mutated member of the species is added to each population. Each mutated individual is different.
stage 4
over time natural selection occurs
stage 5
barriers removed to allow the two species to mingle with each other.
stage 6
if they are two different species their offspring will be infertile.
