Energy In Ecosystems Flashcards
Where is energy transferred?
From one level to the next in a food chain.
What does a food chain start with?
A producer - a green plant capable of using energy from the sun to produce food.
What are primary consumers?
Herbivores - obtain energy from eating the producer.
What are secondary consumers?
Carnivores - obtain energy from eating primary consumers.
What are omnivores?
Animals that eat both plants and other animals.
What do the arrows show in a food chain?
The direction of energy flow.
How much energy is passed on?
10% of energy is passed from one organism to the next and used for growth.
How is energy lost?
It’s lost as heat energy and movement energy.
Types of pyramids
- Pyramid of numbers
- Pyramid of biomass
- Pyramid of energy
What does pyramid of numbers show?
Shows that the number of organisms falls but the size of the organism tends to get bigger.
What does pyramid of biomass show?
Shows that the mass of the organisms falls, produces will have the highest living mass and secondary will have the lowest.
What does pyramid of energy show?
Shows that the quantity of energy falls, greatest energy found in producers and the least in secondary consumers, because energy is lost at each level.
