Specialized Fibers Flashcards
Internal Capsule
The Internal Capsule, which is composed of neurons, allows for the transmission of information between the lobes of the brain.
Corpus Callosum
The “information super highway” of the brain and allows for communication between the hemispheres.
Thalamus
A paired structure which regulates sensory information flowing into the brain and is critical to the maintenance of awareness, alertness, and sleep-wake cycles.
Disorders of the thalamus could result in insomnia (or other sleep disturbance) and decreased sensory perception.
Hypothalamus
Regulates automatic body functions such as hunger, emotion, and metabolism.
Disorders of the hypothalamus could result in excessive eating or lack of eating along with emotional instability.
Basal Ganglia
1) A highly complex system of neural cells that have nuclei with many subcortical and cortical areas.
2) Part of the motor regulatory system.
3) Located near the thalamus.
Diencephalon
1) This structure lies superior to the midbrain between the brainstem and the cerebral hemispheres.
2) Contains the third ventricle, thalamus, epithalamus, hypothalamus, and subthalamus.
