Lobes of the Brain Flashcards
Frontal Lobe
1) Located on the anterior portion of the cerebrum in front of the central fissure (Fissure of Rolando) and above the lateral fissure (Fissure of Sylvian.)
2) Critical to executive functions.
3) Executive function refers to the organized formation of plans and intentions that dictates a person’s intentional behavior.
4) People with damage to the frontal lobes may have difficulty carrying out planned intentional activity.
5) Executive functions include initiation, thought organization, planning, inhibition (self-monitoring), goal setting, and problem solving.
6) The frontal lobe also contains the primary motor cortex or strip, which controls motor planning, including those for speech.
7) Broca’s area is one motor area that is critical to speech function.
8) Damage to the motor areas of speech may result in an expressive language impairment.
The Lobes of the Brain
1) Frontal Lobe
2) Parietal Lobes
3) Occipital Lobe
4) Temporal Lobes
Parietal Lobes
1) Located on the upper sides of the cerebrum posterior to the frontal lobe.
2) The receptor site for somatic sensations such as pain, temperature, and touch.
3) Contain the angular gyrus and the supramarginal gyrus.
4) The angular gyrus is one of the key areas which allows for comprehension of written material.
5) The supramarginal gyrus contributes to the motor planning of speech.
Temporal Lobes
1) Contains the key structures of the primary auditory cortex, the auditory association area, and Wernicke’s area.
2) Damage to these areas may result in a receptive speech impairment.
Occipital Lobe
1) Primarily concerned with vision.
2) Damage to this area may result in a full or partial visual field cut.
