Specialist Measuring Tools Flashcards
What are the three types of measuring gauges? And give their uses.
Marking gauge - wood, marks line or point parallel to edge
Mortise gauge - mark out points of mortise and tenon joint
Cutting gauge - scribe used on metal
What are the three types of calliper? Give their uses.
Odd leg - mark a line parallel to an edge
Internal - measure distance between two opposite sides
External - measure external distance like thickness
What are the types of square? Give their use/feature.
Set square - 30/45/60/90 degrees
Try square - right angle on wood or manufactured board
Engineers square - right angle on metal
Mitre square - wood or manufactured board 45 degrees
What does a densitometer measure?
Degree of darkness of printing inks for paper and board
This helps calibrate printing equipment
What is a divider and how is it used?
Tool used alongside a ruler to measure distance between points on a material
How are jigs and fixtures helpful?
Save time and increase accuracy/consistency
What does a jig do?
Holds the work and guides a tool, eliminating need for repeatedly marking out
What does a fixture do?
Holds work in given position whilst a manufacturing process takes place
How do go/no go gauges save time?
Passes or fails a product based on size.
Finds dimensionally in accurate products
More efficient then vernier calliper and micrometer
