Specialised Cells Flashcards
The function of a muscle cell is to
Contract and cause movement or shape change
The muscle cell has the following specialisations to enable it to perform its function
Long and thin, so conform layers
Where are muscle cells found
Muscle cells are found in parts of the body that require movement or changing shape
What is the function of ciliated cells?
Move substances along the surfaces of passages
What specialisation is the ciliated cells have perform its function
They are column shape, so can stack together to form a layer
Where is ciliated cells found?
In passages that have substances such as mucus that need moving along
What is the function of a root hair cells?
To absorb water and minerals from the soil
What specialisations do root hair cells have to perform their function?
They have hair like extensions to provide a large surface area
Where are root hair cells found?
On the outer surface of roots and plants
What is the function of the xylem cell?
To transport water and minerals up the plant
What specialisations do xylem cells have to perform their function
They have thick side cell walls for strength
What is the function of a red blood cell?
To carry Oxygen around the body for respiration
What specialisations do red blood cells have to perform their function?
They contain haemoglobin which carries oxygen molecules around the body
Where are red blood cells t found?
They are found all around the body where oxygen is needed
How many types of muscle cells are there and what are they?
There are three:
Heart muscles (cardiac)
Smooth-muscle cells
Skeletal muscle cells
