Special Tests Flashcards
How do you perform the Mediate percussion test
Client is prone first, then supine
place middle finger of one hand on thrashings along intercostal space
tips of 1st/2nd finger on other hand, tap firmly on finge over the thorax
What does Mediate percussion test test for and what is the positive reaction
Testing for: assess the lung density, for presence of mucus congestion in specific lobes, hyperinflation
Postive sign:
Sound duller: congestion
Sound resonant: hyper inflated lung
How do you perform the Vocal (tactile) fremitus test
prone position
Place other hands symmetrically on thorax and move over various aspects
Have client repeat ‘99” while doing so
Switch to supine
What does Vocal Fremitus Test test for and it’s positive reactions?
Testing for: areas of bronchial congestion
Positive sign: if vibrations decreased
How do you perform the Rib motion palpating test
Client is prone/supine
hands symmetrically over various aspects of thorax, moving sup to inf
For the Rib motion test, what ways does the ribs move on inspiration/expiration?
Ribs 2-5: Move ant and sup on inspiration, post and inf on expiration
Ribs 7-10: move lat and sup on inspiration, mid and if on expiration
11-12: restricted movement
What does Rib Motion Test test for and it’s positive reaction?
Tests: assesses motion of ribs
Postive signs:
Inhalation: Rib that stops moving is depressed
Exhalation: Rib that stops moving is elevated
How do you perform the Anterior Spinous challenge?
Prone
Place thumbs/hypothenar eminences over individual SP’s, applying slow pressure in ant direction
Do for each vertebra from T1-L5
What does Ant Spinous challenge Test test for and it’s positive reactions?
Tests: for hypo/hypermobility of vertebral segment
Postive sign: local pain
Hypomobile: blocked/decrease movement
Hypermobile: increased mobility
How do you perform the Lateral Spinous Challenge Test?
Prone
Place thumbs on lat border of spine and apply slow pressure to SP’s.
Directed towards opposite side (push away from you)
What does Lat Spinous Challenge Test test for and positive reactions?
Tests: hypo/hypermobility of vertebral segment
Postive signs: local mild pain
Hypomobile: decrease movement
Hypermobile: increase movement
How do you perform Levatores Costarum Fixation
Prone
Rotate head to unaffected side
SP;s immediately sup to affected rib with pressure ant and towards opposite side
With other palm, apply pressure inferolaterally to post angle of rib
What does Levatores Costarum Fixation Test test for and it’s positive reactions?
Tests: length of lavatories rostrum mm, which can be affected, restricting rib motion
Postive Signs: end feel is leathery and client reports tenderness
How do you perform First Rib Mobility Test?
There are several ways to do this; I’m writing the easiest one cause idgaf
Spuine
index or second finger in hollow just post to clavicle, palpating first rib
client inhale/exhale while motion of ribs
What does the First Rib Mobility Test test for and its positive reactions?
Tests: see if there’s restricted mobility of first rib
Positive sign: no movement of first rib
How do you perform the Length Test for Pec Major?
Client Supine
Abduct arms and extend elbows so they are off table
What does the Length Test for Pec Major test for and its positive reactions?
Tests: Shorten Pec Major
Positive signs: Arm does not lean off table in downward position (It stays straighten and elevated)
