Special Senses: The Ear Flashcards
Describe External ear
Called Puma/ auricle also
Funnels sound waves into auditory canal which ends in the tympanic membrane
Cells that produce ear wax
Describe Middle ear
Air filled chamber containing the ossicles, malleus, incus and stapes that passes sound vibrations to the oval window/ amplifies info
Eustachian/ auditory tube
Equalises pressure in the middle ear
Inner ear
Consist of vestibulocochlear tube that transmit sound from inner ear to brain
Where does hearing occur?
In the cochlea
Describe right inner ear
Bony labyrinth found here: filled with fluid called perilympth in cochlea
Glycoprotein mass means head position can be detected hear because of semi-circular canals
The Scalas location
Scala vestibule: ends at oval window
Scales tympani: ends at round window
Function of stapes
Causes oval window to vibrate as sound passes through scalas to the round window
Sound vibration causes endolympth in cochlear duct to vibrate
Function of orgi
Transduction if auditory signals into nerve impulses action potentials
Semicircular canals
Three fluid filled tubes in inner ear that helps with balance when head moves about
Fluid moves hair in each canal
