Special Path Gall Bladder Flashcards
The function of the gall bladder is to store bile in all domestic animals other than ____.
The horse (equids don’t have a gall bladder)
Biliary obstruction is caused by?
Choleliths, foreign bodies (parasites), external compression by a neoplasm, periductular fibrosis
Cholecystitis is what?
Inflammation of the gall bladder
What virus causes cholecystitis in the dog?
canine adenovirus type 1 –> infectious canine hepatitis
What bacteria cuases cholecystitis in calves?
Salmonella enteritidis
Characteristics of Cystic hyperplasia of gall bladder in dogs; benign or malignant?
Mucosa diffusely thickened by variably cystic spaces; benign
Gall bladder mucocele in dogs:
This canine disorder is characterized by progressive accumulation of tenacious mucin-laden bile, which may extend into the cystic, hepatic, and common bile ducts, resulting in variable degrees of bile duct obstruction; dilation of gallbladder with mucoid secretion - may be severely distended with necrosis, rupture and peritonitis; also extrabiliary obstruction (cystic, hepatic, common)
Is gall bladder mucocele in dogs treatable?
if you catch it soon enough and remove gall bladder
Gall bladder mucocele etiology
Unkown; decreased gall bladder motility or altered bile composition; Decreased gallbladder motility leads to luminal bile stasis and enhanced absorption of electrolytes and fluid, promoting biliary sludge formation
CASE: female dog presents icterus, elevated liver enzymes; painful abdomen, anorexia, vomiting. Peritonitis, gall bladder severely distended with ischemic necrosis; liver: portal fibrosis and bile duct proliferation as a result of cholestasis
Gall bladder mucocele
Neoplasia (adenoma or carcinoma) of gall bladder are common or rare?
Rare
