A

What is the first step to urinalysis?

A

make sure to ask the MS/MD if they would like a first catch or clean clatch (aka mid-catch)

What is the difference between a first catch and clean catch?

A

First catch: collect sample as soon as you begin urinating
Clean catch: urinate a little bit, stop, and then resume urinating to collect sample

What is the urinalysis protocol?

A
  1. VERY IMPORTANT: make sure to ask the MS/MD if they would like a first catch or clean catch (aka mid-catch).
  2. Grab a urine kit in the closet between rooms 2 and 3. Put gloves on both hands.
  3. Explain to the patient whether it is a clean or first catch. Tell them once they are done, meet you at the sink near room 2 with the sample. ALWAYS HANDLE URINE SAMPLE AT THE SINK!
  4. Give the patient the wet wipe and tell them to use it to clean from front to back before urinating in the sample cup.
  5. While you wait proceed to Lab Log Out; get 4 labels for the test tubes and urine cup.
  6. When the patient is done, glove both hands and fill up the tubes by inverting the tubes on the cup and allowing it to fill up by vacuum. Label the cup and tubes.
  7. Place label on cup horizontally.
    DOUBLE/TRIPLE BAG the samples. Put the cup in the 1st bag, and the test tubes in the 2nd bag. Place the 1st bag into the 2nd bag. Place those into a 3rd bag with other blood tests, if applicable.
  8. You can bag a urinalysis together with other labs that are stored in the fridge

  1. Place wax paper in toilet bowl.
  2. Deposit fecal matter onto paper.
  3. Use stick in the tube sampel and place the tip fo the stick in the fecal sample.
  4. put stick back into the test tube sample
  5. WRITE TIME AND DATE ON TEST TUBE LABEL AND FIT SLIP
  6. Roll napkin over test tube sample and place it into specimen bag
  7. Place sample with completed lab label (in specimen bag) in the pre-paid envelope
  8. Mail it asap.

  3. Place sample into the freezer
  4. Return to the clinic within the month (but as soon as possible) of bowel movement with ice to drop off

  1. UG assigns you the patient. Confirm patient’s identity. No vitals needed!
  2. Bring the Patient to the sink, put gloves on both hands, and obtain sample from patient at the sink near room 2
  3. Ask patient to wait in the waiting room while AD confirms all label are correct and complete.
  4. Confirm lab label is completed and is within the month!
  5. Log Out (DROP OFF): Put “H. PYLORI” with a 2 in a circle next to it. (2)
  6. Patient may leave after MS/RN & Lab Log-Out Team have checked lab form & labels. Let the patient know that we will call them back when we receive their results.
  7. Follow the Time-Sensitive Lab Protocol
  8. Return chart to receptionist, “Done done with LAB”

FIT Kit tests for colon cancer, comes with pre-paid evelope and has instructions on envelope. Plus you grab an extra instruction paper for the language the patient prefers

H. Pylori tests for stomach or duodenal ulcer and must have the sample test cup and biohazard bag.

  4. follow the faxing protocol for the presrciption
  5. write “Done” by the ab results
