Special Laboratory Tests / Laboratory Tests Flashcards
Urinalysis (UA), Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT), H. Pylori, Storing Labs, Lab Calls
For the urinalysis (UA), what materials are required?
A specimen bag, 2 test tubes, 1 urine cup, and 1 wet wipe
1 additional orange-tipped test tube, 4 lab labels, and 2-3 bags
What is the first step to urinalysis?
make sure to ask the MS/MD if they would like a first catch or clean clatch (aka mid-catch)
What is the difference between a first catch and clean catch?
First catch: collect sample as soon as you begin urinating
Clean catch: urinate a little bit, stop, and then resume urinating to collect sample
What is the urinalysis protocol?
- VERY IMPORTANT: make sure to ask the MS/MD if they would like a first catch or clean catch (aka mid-catch).
- Grab a urine kit in the closet between rooms 2 and 3. Put gloves on both hands.
- Explain to the patient whether it is a clean or first catch. Tell them once they are done, meet you at the sink near room 2 with the sample. ALWAYS HANDLE URINE SAMPLE AT THE SINK!
- Give the patient the wet wipe and tell them to use it to clean from front to back before urinating in the sample cup.
- While you wait proceed to Lab Log Out; get 4 labels for the test tubes and urine cup.
- When the patient is done, glove both hands and fill up the tubes by inverting the tubes on the cup and allowing it to fill up by vacuum. Label the cup and tubes.
- Place label on cup horizontally.
DOUBLE/TRIPLE BAG the samples. Put the cup in the 1st bag, and the test tubes in the 2nd bag. Place the 1st bag into the 2nd bag. Place those into a 3rd bag with other blood tests, if applicable. - You can bag a urinalysis together with other labs that are stored in the fridge
What is the third step of urinalysis after you get the urine kit and glove your hands?
Explain to the patient whether it is a clean or first catch. tell them once they are done to meet you at the sink near room 2 with the sample
Where shoudl you handle the urine sample?
ALWAYS AT THE SINK (near room 2)
What is the fourth step of urinalysis after you explain the procedures to the patient?
Give the patient the wet wipe and tell them to use it to clean from front of back before urinating in the sample cup.
While you wait for a patient to finish peeing for urinalysis, what should you do?
Proceed to lab log out and get 4 labels for the test tubes and urine cup.
What is the 6th step of urinalysis after you get the labels for the test tubes and urine cup and the patient is finished?
Glove both hands and fill up the tubes by inverting the tubes on the cup and allowing it to fill up by vacuum. Labe the cup and tubes. Place label on cup horizontally.
What is the 7th step of urinalysis after you fill up the tubes and label them?
Double/Triple bag the samples. Put the cup in the 1st bag and the test tubes in the 2nd bag. Place those into a 3rd bag with other blood tests if applicable
A patient has a APTT lab along with urinalysis. How many bags would you use?
1 bag for the cup. 2nd bag for the test tube nd cup bag. Store the urinalysis with APTT
T/F You can bag a urinalysis together with other labs that are stored in the fridge.
True
If a lab is non-time and non-temperature sensitive, where should you store the lab?
In the refrigerator
A patient comes in and has to do labs that are all stored the same. What can be done with bagging?
Labs can be stored in the same bag with the same lab form. ONLY if they are stored the same.
A patient comes in and has to do multiple labs that are stored differently. What are the rules for lab forms?
Need a different lab form to go with the biohazard bag containing all the patient labs.
Where does the lab form go into?
Biohazard bag pocket
should have the labs listed of the test tubes in the biohazard bag.
T/F PAP Smear can be bagged with other labs.
Usually it is bagged on its own but ONLY HPV can be added into the same bag.
How many forms and bags are required for a PAP Smear and HPV Co-Test?
2 forms, 1 bag
What materials are required for the FIT?
FIT Kit and the instructions sheet, FIT Kit with lab label attached to tube
What does FIT stand for?
Fecal Immunochemical Test
What is the FIT Protocol?
- Obtain FIT Kit instructions sheet from the wall near the Lab Draw Station, lab form, and FIT Kit from cabinet by the sink.
Check FIT Kit for expiration date. Check test tube. - Complete a lab label and lab form with patient information and leave date/time blank. Place label on test tube.
- Explain FIT Kit Patient Instructions & use sample FIT Kit to demonstrate.
- Give the patient: FIT Kit instructions sheet, FIT Slip, &
FIT Kit (label attached to tube) - Remind the patient to fill in the time and date on the lab label, FIT Slip, and Lab Form and to mail back the envelope as soon as possible
- Log Out Fecal Immunochemical Test (write out completely)
- Notify the patient that the results will be sent to clinic and we will call them when the results are in.
What is the seconds step of FIT? After obtaining the sheets, forms, and kit?
Complete a lab label and lab form with patient information and leave date/time blank. Place label on test tube.
What is the third step of FIT after you complete the abel label and form.
Explain FIT Kit Patient Instructions and use sample FIT Kit to demonstrate.
What is the fourth step of FIT? After you explain the instructions to the patient
Give the patient the FIT KIT instructions sheet, FIT Slip, and FIT Kit (label attached to the tube)
