Special Circulatory Routes Flashcards
0
Q
Pathways to hepatic portal vein
A
- Superior mesentery
- Splenic
R&L gastrica open directly into HPV
Cystic vein drains gall bladder directly into hpv.
1
Q
Hepatic Portal Circulation
A
Carries blood from GI organs and spleen to liver via hepatic portal vein.
Blood is O2 poor but nutrient rich.
Liver also receiving arterial blood from hepatic artery. All blood re-enters circulation via hepatic veins.
Reasons:
- Modification for storage (ie glucose to glycogen)
- Detoxify
- Phagocytize bacteria
2
Q
Structures unique to fetuses
A
- Foramen ovale (in atrial septum). Becomes fossa ovalis
- Ductus arteriosis (connects pulmonary trunk with aorta)
Becomes ligamentum arteriosum - Ductus venosus connects umbilical veins to IVC).
Becomes Ligamentum venosum
3
Q
Umbilical arteries
A
Carry deoxygenated blood and waste to placenta from baby.
4
Q
Umbilical veins
A
Carry oxygenated blood and nutrients back to baby
