Spanish Speaking World Final Flashcards
Diaspora
the dispersion or spread of people from their homeland
Why was immigration to Latin America different in the 20th C?
Latin America started looking to Asia for immigration
Why did Latin America look to Asia for immigration over Europe and what were they “losing” by doing this?
Asia was known for their people being better workers than people from Europe. “losing” the whitening of their society that they wanted so bad originally: identity change
Why did Latin America stop looking for immigration from Europe?
Europe started developing very socialist ideas: developing countries can’t afford worker’s strikes
Assimilation
to absorb into a culture/society
Pros of assimilation
you assimilate (lol), you get jobs
Cons of assimilation
lose cultural identity
Linguistic Fragmentation
loss of language > if only one parent speaks the language, its likely the children will not pick it up. if both parents speak the language then it is likely to be passed down
How does diaspora complicate the immigration experience?
by complicating assimilation: people can recognize the diaspora in you (they can tell when someone is not from their country)
Mainstreaming
countries will simplify/”boil down” their culture to sell themselves to other places (exaggerating certain aspects); the use of the national name obscures the roots of said culture
Why did early Chinese immigrants have a different experience immigrating to Latin America than Japanese or Korean immigrants did?
early Chinese immigrants were mainly single men on their own (easily assimilated) while Japanese and Korean immigrants brought their families (this made assimilation harder)
What is the importance of music in Latin American culture?
There is a low filter in music, meaning people talk about anything and everything through music
