Subjunctive sentence structure
A main (ind) clause that uses indicative mood (presented as fact) and determines if the subjunctive is needed in the following dependent clause and what tense the subjunctive verb is in.
When is subjunctive used?
1) INFLUENCE: express influence on outcome of an event or behavior of another person
Ex: I want some students to do the work.
Why: Just because I want you to do your work, does not mean that you will in fact do it.
Ex. #2: It’s important that some students do the work.
Why:If I tell you that I think something is important, I am hoping that it will influence behavior or the outcome of the event. However, I cannot verify that the students will do the work.
2) DOUBT: to express doubt about the outcome or truth of the statement
Ex: I doubt some students will do the work.
Why: I communicate the idea that from my viewpoint, your doing your work is not going to happen.
3) HYPOTHETICAL ANTECEDENT: to describe something already mention in the sentence (an antecedent)that may or may not exist
Ex: I need some students who will do the work.
Why: Because I say I need some students, I cannot verify that such students actually exist, which makes them hypothetical.
