Why did the US start to look overseas for territory in the late 1800’s?
Because of the Census Bureau in 1890 that ended the Westward Expansion, they wanted to colonize more land. However, most land was already taken so there was no point when there’s no “worlds” left. However, there were economic opportunities.

Social Darwinism?
It was a reasonable way of showing imperialistic actions of survival of the fittest. Meaning that whoever could adapt quickly and survive longer
Spanish–American War (yellow journalism)
People like Joseph Pulitzer and William Hearst were yellow journalists. During the Spanish–American War, they were always fighting for headlines in newspapers to usually talk about what was happening in war. It was sensationalism over facts.
Spanish–American War (USS Maine)
The USS Maine was a second class battleship that was blown up in Havana, Cuba on February 15th, 1898. The U.S blamed it on Spain using yellow journalism.
What did the U.S gain?
After the war, they were given new territories. These are known as Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines from Spain. From this, there was another treaty of Paris.
