Space and satellites Flashcards
Our solar system is found in…
The Milky Way galaxy.
Planets in our solar system are:
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune.
What happens with the temperature as the plants get further from the sun?
It decreases
What is the length of a year?
The length of a year is the time taken for a planet to orbit the sun once.
The scale of the universe:
- Planets
- Stars (including sun)
- Solar system
- Galaxy
- Universe = a group of solar systems
Geocentric model =
Earth is at the center and the sun and planets orbit it. (Ptolemy)
Heliocentric model =
All the planets orbit the sun in perfect circles (Copernicus)
The law of planetary motion =
Orbit of planets around the sun are elliptical. Scale of universe (Kepler)
Galileo…
used a telescope, he saw moons orbiting Jupiter.
Telescopes
✔️ Relatively cheep.
❌ Only work at night, don’t work if there are too many clouds.
Rovers
✔️Can take samples and send info back to Earth.
❌Might crash land.
Satellites (probes)
✔️Don’t need astronauts so can go deep into space.
❌No one on board to fix any malfunctions.
Wat is a satellite?
Anything that orbits a planet.
How many types of satellites are?
2 with are 1.natural E.g. Moons, asteroids and comets
2. Artificial- man made= geostationary & polar
What is a Geostationary satellite?
Is a satellite that orbits around the equators, at the same speed as earth rotates so that they stay above the same point.
Geostationary satellites are used for…
- communication
2. navigation
What is a Polar satellite?
Is a satellite that orbits north to south around the poles as the Earth rotates so that get a view of the whole earth.
Polar satellites are used for…
- Weather
2. Spying
What is weight?
Weight is a force and ism measured in Newtons. Weight changes depending on the gravity.
What is mass?
Mass is the amount of material an object is made up of. It’s measured in kg and does not change.
Weight=
mass x gravity
The bigger a planet…
the more gravity
What is a light year?
A light year is the distance light travels in 1 year used to measure huge distances in space.
When is it summer?
It is summer when the hemisphere you are in is tilted towards the sun.
