Periodic Table Flashcards
What is the Periodic Table?
A table with shows 118 known elements aranged in groups with similar properties.
Group 1 is called…
Alkali metals
Group 7 is called…
Halogens
Group 8 is called…
Noble gases
What is the middle group called?
Transition metals
If we react magnesium with oxygen, The product is
Magnesium oxide
IfI react copper with nitrogen, The product is
Copper nitride
E,g. What does NITRATE contain
Nitrogen and Oxygen
E.g. Waht does Carbonate contain?
Carbon and oxygen
What does Sulfate contain?
Sulfur and oxygen.
If you ask to write a formula.e.g. H20
Is wrong because we need to make sure that the number is subscript and lower case like this H₂O
Alkali Metals
- All react with water to create a metal hydroxide and hydrogen gas.
- Gets MORE reactive as we go DOWN the group.
- Soft and dull.
Lithium + water =
Fizzing
Sodium + water =
Fizzing, become a sphere, moved on surface.
Potassium + water =
Purple flame
Transition Metals
- “Normal” metals
- Hard and shiny
- Good conductors
The Halogens
- Get LESS reactive as we go DOWN the group
Flourine =
Very pale yellow gas
Chlorine =
Pale green gas
Bromine =
Orange liquid
Iodine
Grey solid
What are Atoms?
Atoms are the smallest unit that al substances can be broken down into.
What are Molecules?
Molecules are 2 or more atoms with are chemically bonded together.
What are Elements?
Elements are all of the atoms are the same type.
What are Compounds?
Compounds are molecules made up of different types of atoms.
Compounds features are…
- Compounds are usually a metal and a non-metal.
- We name them in 2 parts.
1. The first part of the name is the name of the metal.
2. The second part is the name of the non-metal BUT the ending changes to -ide. MgO- Magnesium oxIDE NaCl-sodium chlorIDE.
3. Ift. the compound contains a metal, a non-metal AND oxygen, it’s name ends in -ate. LiNO₃- lithium nitrate CaSO₄- calthium sulfate.
H₂O =
3 atoms, 2 elements.
CO₂ =
3 atoms, 2 elements
CaSO₄ =
6 atoms, 3 elements

Test for Hydrogen=
Lit a splint gives a squeaky pop.
Test for Oxygen=
A glowing splint relights.
Test for Carbon dioxide=
Turns lime water milky.
