SPACE Flashcards
Beauty, using the principles of
design. architecture as distinguished
from the mere building
or Engineering structure.
CONTRIBUTIONS OF
AESTHETICS
Consist of forms and spaces whose positions in space and relationship with one another are regulated by a three dimensional pattern or field, such as a skeletal structural system of columns and beams.
GRID FORMS
uses proximity to relate its spaces to one another. It often consists of repetitive cellular spaces that have similar functions and share a common visual trait, orientation.
CLUSTERED FORMS
Compositions of linear forms
that extends outward from central
space or form in a wheel
manner.
RADIAL FORMS
Consists of a number of secondary forms clustered about dominant central parent forms, Centrality, can embody sacred places.
CENTRALIZED FORMS
Services to occupants (utility, function) How high would be the kitchen storage, reach, How big the furnishings will be to learn the size of the enclosed space.
USE OF SPACE
Consists of forms arranged segmentally
in a row of repetitive
space (wall path)
LINEAR FORMS
Strength or permanence and
security.
COLLABORATION AND
USE OF MATERIALS
Sequence of spaces
Configuration of space
Straight path, primary organizing element. Curvilinear or segmented, have branches or form a loop.
Linear
Linear path extending from or terminating at a central
common point.
RADIAL
Single, continuous path originates from a central point, revolves around it & becomes increasingly distant from it.
SPIRAL
2 sets of parallel paths that intersect at regular intervals & create square or rectangular fields.
GRID
paths that connect
established paths
NETWORK
Building employs combination of all the configuration of space
COMPOSITE
- The integrity of each space maintained.
- Configuration of path is flexible.
- Mediating spaces used to link path with spaces.
PASS BY SPACES
- May pass through Axially, Obliquely or along its edge.
- Cutting through the space creates patterns of rest & Cutting through the space creates patterns of rest & movement within it
PASS THROUGH SPACES
- Location of the space establishes the path.
- Used for functionally or symbolically important
spaces.
TERMINATE IN A SPACE
Corridors, Halls, Galleries, Stairways & rooms.
Form of Circulation Space
Public galleria or private corridor that relates to the
spaces it links through entrances in wall plane.
CLOSED CIRCULATION
Balcony or gallery provides visual & spatial continuity
with the spaces it links.
OPEN ON ONE SIDE CIRCULATION
Colonnaded passageways becomes a physical extension of the space it passes through.
OPEN ON BOTH SIDES CIRCULATION
Means of vertical transport that provide vertical movement b/w levels of building or
outdoor space.
STAIRWAYS
5 TYPES OF STAIRWAYS
- Straight-run Stair
- L-Shaped Stair
- U-Shaped Stair
- Circular Stair
- Spiral Stair
