SP4 - Waves Flashcards
What are the two types of waves?
Transverse and longitudinal
What is the definition of a transverse wave?
A type of wave that moves upwards and downwards parallel to the x-axis. Transverse waves only move forward
What is the definition of a longitudinal wave?
A type of mechanical wave that moves from side to side on the x-axis. Longitudinal waves transfer energy with the help of a medium
What does the lambda symbol represent? (λ)
Wavelength
What is the equation to calculate wave speed?
v = fλ (v = speed f = frequency λ = wave length)
What is the definition of refraction?
Refraction is the bending of light through a medium
What do you use to measure the angle of refraction?
The angle of the incident ray
How do you calculate the refractive index?
Calculate the sine of angle i (incidence) and angle r (refraction), then divide sin i by sin r.
What is the definition of a refractive index?
The ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum compared to the speed of light in a medium
List the steps of refraction
Light enters the medium, the light bends inside said medium, the light then leaves at a different angle (reflection angle)
