When Stalin died and Khrushchev took over indicating that Soviet control would be more relaxed

He wanted to leave the Warsaw Pact and have free elections in Hungary (no more communism)

Riots begin and statue of Stalin is smashed up
What happened on the 4th of november?
1000 Russian tanks go into Budapest and 4000 Hungarians are killed fighting the USSR
Why did Khrushchev react so harshly to the Hungarian Uprising and Imre Nagy’s reforms?
He was afraid that if Hungary left the Warsaw Pact other countries would follow.
Why didn’t the US send troops into Hungary?
- couldn’t send in troops as this would have meant war
- president Eisenhower didn’t believe Hungary was worth the risk of nuclear war
