1600’s when the Dutch East India Company began trade with SA
What was apartheid?
South Africa’s system of government from 1948-1990
What was the Great Trek?
1830’s-1860’s many Afrikaners migrate into interior of South Africa. Establish Orange Free state and Transvaal both republics.
What was the Berlin conference?
1884-1885 was the meeting between European powers and U.S. who’s main goal was to set rules for peaceful imperialism and divide Africa up equally.
How did the British become involved?
By gaining control of Cape Colony around Cape Town and struggled with Afrikaners and black South Africans for control of the area
What was the Boer Wars?
Late 1800’s - early 1900’s battle between U.K. And The Orange Free State and Transvaal. British win.
Who established apartheid?
The National Party (white Afrikaner Party) was voted into power and creates a legal separation system.
Why was SA so desirable?
Because it contained large gold and diamond supplies that the European countries fought over it. France and Britain became dominant in territory throughout Africa.
What are the three capitals of South Africa?
Pretoria - executive capital
Cape Town - legislative capital
Bloemfontein - judicial capital
What year did South Africa become a British colony?
1910
Who were the Afrikaners and Boers?
Descendants of early Dutch settlers; white. They developed own language (Afrikaans) and identity.
What does Afrikaans mean?
The separation of races (black and white)
