Sources of food Flashcards
What are primary sources of food?
Foods that are obtained directly from plants and animals, these are considered the main sources of nutrition
What are secondary sources of food?
Foods that have been processed or prepared using primary sources of food
e.g. pasta and canned foods
Give advantages of organic farming.
- Excellent animal welfare
- Restricts the use of chemicals
- Looks after soil
- No GM crops
- Tastes nicer
- Natural fertiliser
Give disadvantages of organic farming.
- Expensive
- Less availability
- Shorter shelf life
- Repetitive nutrients
- No difference in taste
Give advantages of free range farming.
- Good animal welfare
- Animals behave naturally
- Tastes better
Give disadvantages of free range farming.
- Lower yield
- Expensive
- More land needed
- Animals can be eaten
- Animals can suffer from weather
Give advantages of intensive farming.
- High quantities
- Increases use of resources
- Cheap
Give disadvantages of intensive farming.
- Terrible animal welfare
- Chemicals in food chain
- Over farming of nutrients
- Overpopulation causes death
- Animals can’t behave naturally
What is sustainable fishing?
Fishing to a point where fish can still recover and thrive to stop extinction of more species
Give disadvantages of locally produced foods.
- Less variety
- Only seasonal foods
Give advantages of locally produced foods.
- Cheaper
- Less food miles
- Fresher
- More communication between producer and consumer
- Can provide better nutrition
- Supports local farmers and businesses
What are seasonal foods?
Foods that can only be grown at certain times of the year and otherwise have to be imported from other countries
What are GM foods?
GM foods have been genetically modified ( their genetic structure has been changed ) to increase qualities of the food
Give advantages of GM foods.
- Can improve quality and shelf life
- Enables crops to grow in difficult conditions
- Aids insect resistance
- Increased size, shape, taste, colour and nutritional value
- Can be cheaper to produce
Give disadvantages of GM foods.
- Long term safety is unknown
- Environmental issues
- Lack of information between producer and consumer
- Lack of clear labelling
