sources of coastal sediment - terrestrial (from land) : fluvial deposition (rivers) Flashcards

1
Q

where does sediment come from in terrestrial places? (river meeting sea)

A

terrestrial land –> comes from fluvial deposition
- rivers transport sediment - obtained via erosion, weathering, + MM along the course of the river and deposit at the coast.
- as the river meets the sea = a reduction in energy as the forward movement of water is prevented, energy dissipated and the river’s load deposited.
- progressive deposition with the larger particles deposited first and the smallest carried furthest out to sea

Q

what happens when fresh and salty water meet?

A

= flocculation - when they enter saline conditions clay particles clump together due to electrical charges, become heavy + sink (deposited)
