'Source Filter' Flashcards
Function of the labial valve of the vocal tract?
Changing lip shape, restrict airflow.
Function of the lingual valve of the vocal tract?
To contact teeth, the alveolar ridge, and the hard/soft palate.
Function of the velopharyngeal valve of the vocal tract?
Directs airflow to oral and nasal cavity
Function of the laryngeal valve?
Voicing.
What is the source of speech sounds?
The vocal folds moving the air through rarefaction and compression
*It changes fundamental frequency and harmonics.
What is the filter of speech sounds?
The vocal tract valves.
Where does the output of sound take place?
The lips and nose.
What is the function of the filters in speech?
to create rich sound in speech through resonance, depending on length and width of the tract
What are the 3 elements of the source filter theory?
- Source spectrum of F0 and harmonics
- Filter
- Output
What are the 2 types of resonators?
- Acoustic
- Mechanical
What is a mechanical resonator?
When an object is set into vibration (such as a tuning fork).
What is an acoustic resonator?
A receptacle filled with air (such as the human voice)
Describe a node.
A closed end with minimal velocity, maximum pressure.
Describe an antinode.
An open end with maximum velocity, no constraints, maximum movement of particles, and minimum pressure.
Name 4 speech systems that DDK tasks may test.
- Respiratory
- Articulatory
- Phonatory
- Resonatory
