This short sentence shows how abanded he felt when he was left by his loved one. Exaggeration at the “quietest” . Paradox of a fire that makes no noise adds to this image of loss and loneliness.

The alliteration of “c” builds up the suspension throughout the first stanza. “clatter” could be referred to a lot of noise. This is showing that nature is alive and full of sound. Contrast to next stanza.
