Sound-waves Flashcards
Parts of a sound waves
What is an oscillation?
Something that moves backwards and forwards
Like a mountain
What part of the wave is the peak/crest?
The top of a wave.
What is a vibration?
Backwards and forwards motion of the parts of a solid or a liquid.
LENGTH
What is a wavelength?
Wavelength is the distance from one crest to another, or from one trough to another.
What is a trough?
The bottom of a wave.
What is an amplitude?
The distance from the middle to the top/bottom of a wave.
What is the frequency of sound measured in?
Hertz (Hz)
What is frequency?
.
Frequency is the number of waves that pass a given point in one second.
What is sound made out of?
Vibrations.
How much is one kilohertz?
1000 Hz
What is an echo?
A reflection of a sound wave off an object.
What is decibel?
A commonly used unit of sound intensity or loundness.
What shape is a cochlea?
A snail shaped.
What is ultrasound?
Sound at a frequency greater than 20 000 hertz (beyond the range of human hearing).
What is a vacuum?
A space in which there is no matter.
