Diegetic Sound
Noises already in the scene that have not been edited in.
Examples: phone ring, voices
Non-diegetic sound
Sounds edited in from post-production.
Examples: narration, music
Ambient Sound
Describes a background noise or music and is often natural to the setting. Sound effects are normally added to a film by Foley artist in post-production.
Foley
Amplifies or replaces sound recorded on set at the time of filming (known as field recording). Most movies use a combination of both. They use creative ways to generate a sound making viewers think they are real.
Parallel Sound
The music complements what viewers see in the scene.
Contrapuntal Sound
What viewers hear and see does not match.
Sound Bridge
Sound that proceeds from one scene to another, maintaining the continuity of a film. They can happen at the beginning and end of a scene.
