Shot Types and Angles Flashcards
Establishing shot
Sets the scene of the action introducing context. Involves shots of scenery and setting. Intended to show viewers where the events will take place.
Over the shoulder shot
Shot type in which camera is positioned over someone’s shoulder. Usually used during conversation.
High angle shot
Designed to make a person/object look much smaller than they are. The person/object is often swallowed up by their setting and become apart of a wider picture.
Close-up
Shows enlarged view of a person/object, drawing attention to it, creating emotion.
Extreme long shot
The focus is on the wider surroundings as opposed to any character. This allows the audience to see the surroundings on a larger scale.
Low angle shot
Makes person/object seem larger, giving a sense of power.
Extreme close-up
This shot is used to portray the smallest details of a character’s emotions at a particular part of the scene.
Medium shot
A shot when a person/object is in the middle distance of a frame, still allowing some of the background to be seen.
Point of View (POV)
Shot allows the scene to be seen through a particular character’s eyes. It is usually established by being positioned between a shot of a character looking at something and showing their reaction.
Long shot
Shows people/object from a distance, often presenting a sense of size and scale. It also shows the relationship between a person/object and the surroundings.
