Cut
Visual transition in editing in which one shot is instantaneously replaced on screen by another.
Fade
A visual transition between shots and scenes. Editor fades one shot and replaces it with another. Often used to show a change of place and time.
Dissolve
Scene transition in which the end of a shot overlaps the beginning of the next one.
Wipe
Travelling bar across the frame which wipes one shot off and putting the next one on. Rarely used in contemporary movies but common in the 1930s and 40s.
Split screen
When two or more images are displayed simultaneously on a screen.
Continuity editing
Editing that creates action that flows smoothly across shots and scenes without jarring inconsistencies. This establishes a sense of story for the viewer.
Match on action
Editing technique in which one shot cuts to another one portraying the same action that the subject was doing in the first shot. This is a form of continuity editing.
Shot reverse shot
It is a form of continuity editing used for conversations or when characters are looking at each other or something.
Montage
A series of shots compiled into a sequence of space, time and information. it often suggests the passage of time but also may have other symbolic meanings.
Jump cut
A cut which creates a lack of continuity leaving out parts of an action, often suggesting going forward in time.
Cross-cutting
Transitioning between two or more scenes, indicating they happen simultaneously which establishes a relationship between these Cross-cutting.
Eye-line match
Matching the eyelines between two characters. For example, if Sam looks to the right in shot A, Jean will look to the left in shot B. Therefore establishing a relationship between continuity and proximity.
Slow motion
The action of playing back a video much slower than it was originally filmed.
Repetition of action
Shows the same scene from multiple camera angles such as in a football match.
The 180-degree rule
A rule of direction which dictates that depending on the position of the camera the orientation of the content will be affected.
