Sound Devices Flashcards
Sound Devices
Can guide the way a reader feels
Rhyme
2+ words sound the same except for initial letter(s)
Connotes a harmony of ideas
Used in poetry sometimes
Keeps theme unified
Rhythm
The cadence that a phrase or series of phrases develops
Mixed rhythms help keep reader attention
Repeated ones can create unity
Waves- long fluid rhythm
Crisis situation- short, clipped, dialogue
Alliteration
repetition of sound at the beginning of words in a phrase
ex. The sleepy shore is submerged by shallow waves
not just a sound for emphasis, but an appropriate sound
Assonance
The repetition of vowel sounds within words
Ex. The petite clerk meekly ate the bee. [Long e repetition emphasizes smallness of subject/action because long e closes the mouth. So a in farther, which is more open, would not work well in this example)
Lit test loves this (I think. I saw it come up like 57 times on a practice ting dere)
Consonance
Refers to the repetition of consonant sounds within certain words
Ex. “Tony’s fingertips typed at the computer until dawn”
The t sound emulates the contact between fingers and keyboard)
Onomatopoeia
Uses words to imitate the sound they represent
Ex. “Anita bonked Jared on the head when he tried to zip by” bonked and zip are both examples
