Exposition
Also known as introduction. Gives basic background and sets the scene.
Expository Element
a device or description that helps introduce a narrative
ex. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”(Dickens)
Rising Action
Also known as complication.
develops the conflict, which is necessary for the story
3 main types of conflict (and explanations)
- human vs. environment (either vs. an animal/or force of nature or just a general nonhuman force such as the recession)
- human vs. human (character vs. character ex. HP v Voldemort)
- human vs. self (protagonist must overcome own nature/face an inner struggle ex. stage fright)
Climax
Also called “high point” or the “point of no return”(like G1 checkpoint).
The story’s main progression is forever altered (THERE IS NO GOING BACK)
ex. Tomb scene in Romeo and Juliet
Falling Action
Also called “reversal”
brings the story to it’s end after the climax
ex. After Romeo and Juliet died, everyone got together to remember them
Denouement
Also known as the conclusion
Give the story closure
ex. They decided to build statues of R + J and be friends (little wrap up speech)
