Sound Flashcards
How is sound produced
through vibrations
how do we hear sounds?
vibrations cause air particles to vibrate in series of compressions and rarefactions till they reach the ear
what type of waves are sound waves?
what is the human hearing range?
longitudinal
20Hz-20,000Hz
what is ultrasound?
sound beyond 20,000Hz
how do echos occur?
this happens when sound is reflected off a bare smooth surface
how can someone around a corner hear you talking? why can’t they hear if you whisper?
if the gap is comparable to the sound wave, it diffracts causing it to spread and reach your ears, if you whispered the sound wave is not comparable and does not diffract as much
what is frequency in terms of sound waves?
this is how squished the waves are, shows pitch, the more squished the higher the pitch
what is amplitude in terms of sound waves
how large the waves are, this is volume, the bigger the height of the wave the louder the sound
