Energy resources Flashcards
where is most our energy transferred from
fossil fuels
how is gas oil coal found?
gas- trapped between seems of rock under the earth
oil- formed from dead marine organisms
coal- dead trees and plant material
how are fossil fuels used to generate electricity
they are burnt, which heat up water in a boiler, this produces steam which drives a turbine and turns on a generator
how does the burning of fossil fuels connected to global warming
when they are burnt they release carbon dioxide, this is a greenhouse gas that gets trapped in the atmosphere and traps heat which causes a greenhouse effect
how do we use wind power?
wind turbines are built, wind drives the turbine which turns on a generator
how do we use wave power
wave machines use the kinetic energy from the waves to drive electricity generators
how do we use hydroelectric energy
rainwater is collected in a reservoir which flows downhill, flowing water drive turbines which turn on electrical generators
how do we use tidal energy
tidal power stations trap use a tidal barrage and convert the potential energy from the change in height of the tides to drive a turbine which drives a generator
how do we use solar energy
solar panels convert light energy into electrical energy
how do we use geothermal energy
energy from natural radioactive substances heat up the surrounding rocks. water is pumped into the rocks to produce steam which drives an electric turbine, turning the generator on
how do we use biofuel/biomass
we take living or recently dead organisms and burn it, the heat heats up water turning it to steam which drives turbines, turning on a generator.
