kinetic theory Flashcards
what is temperature
average kinetic energy per particle
what is specific heat capacity
the amount of energy needed to change the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1 degree
what does it mean to have high specific heat capacity
when materials absorb heat without using it (temperature changes slowly)
when the temperature is rising what is the energy provided being converted into?
kinetic energy
when substance changes state what is the energy provided converted into?
potential energy
what happens to temperature during change of state
stays constant
REQUIRED PRACTICAL- finding the cooling curve of wax
how would we carry this out?
what are causes of inaccuracy and how can we overcome it?
- place wax into test tube a
- create water bath with hot water
- wait until wax is fully melted
- remove from water place thermometer in test tube and record temperature every 30 seconds
- plot a graph
causes of inaccuracy- not all wax melts at the same time avoid by stirring
what is specific latent heat
amount of energy needed to change 1kg of a substance’s state
what are the 2 types of specific latent heat and what do they mean
specific latent heat of vaporisation
liquid to gas
specific latent heat of fusion
solid to liquid
