A soundtrack
is recorded music synchronized to the images of a motion picture, video game or television program.
Incidental music
Music used in a film as a background to create a particular atmosphere.
Theme music
Used at the beginning to introduce a film or program and usually at the end.
Sound motif
is a sound that is associated with a character or place.
Foley sound effects
is the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to a film. The reproduced sounds can be anything such as footsteps, squeaky doors and breaking glass.
voice over
is a production technique where a voice (not part of the narrative so non diegetic) is used in a radio, television production and film making. The voice over reads from a script and is usually pre-recorded and then placed on top of the film.
Mode of address
how media speaks to the audience. Direct mode of address speaks directly to ‘you’.
Accent
A unique way of pronouncing a language associated with a particular country.
Tone
A vocal sound with reference to its pitch, quality, and strength.
Rhythm
A repeated pattern of the sound.
Overlapping dialogue
When editing a scene, the cut is arranged so that a bit of dialogue or noise is heard under a shot of the character or from another element in that scene.
Sound bridge
happens when sound carries over a visual transition in a movie.
Reverberation

Echo
Repetition of sound produced by the reflection of sound waves from the wall.
A needledrop
refers to the moment when a vinyl record is played, typically starting from the needle (stylus) being placed on the record’s grooves, which then produces sound.
