Sound Flashcards
How is sound produced?
Sound is produced by the vibrations of source. These vibrations are transmitted to the air molecules, the air molecules vibrate about their original positions in a direction parallel to the propagation of the wave itself.
The particles do not move together to the wave.
Region of compression has the highest air pressure while region of rarefaction has the lowest air pressure.
Can sound waves be transmitted through a vacuum?
No. Sound waves require a medium.
Why does sound travel faster in solid?
Compression and rarefaction propagates faster in denser medium.
Frequency and pitch
The higher the frequency of sound, the higher the pitch.
Amplitude and loudness
The larger the amplitude of sound, the greater the loudness.
Ultrasound
Sound of frequencies above the upper hearing limit of the human range of audibility (20 kHz).
Infrasound
Sound frequencies below the lower hearing limit of the human range of audibility (20 Hz).
Application of ultrasound
- Ultrasound echolocation
- Ultrasound scanning
- Quality control in buildings
