Energy, Work and Power Flashcards
Energy
The capacity to do work.
Kinetic Energy, KE
Energy a body possesses due to its motion. KE= 1/2 mv^2
Gravitational Potential Energy, GPE
Energy which a body possesses because of its position relative to the ground GPE = mgh
Elastic Potential Energy
Energy stored in a body due to its elastic deformation.
Principle of Conservation of Energy
- Energy cannot be created or destroyed.
- Energy can only be converted from one form to another or transferred from one body to another.
- The total amount of energy in an isolated system remains the same.
One Watt, 1W
Rate of work done/energy conversion of one joule per second.
Efficiency
Ratio of useful energy output to total energy input.
Work done, W
Product of the force of an object and the distance moved in the direction of the force. W =Fd
One Joule
Work done by the force of one newton, which moves an object through a distance of one metre in the direction of the force.
Power,P
Rate of Work Done
