General Wave Properties Flashcards
Waves
A periodic motion travelling disturbance repeated at regular intervals, which transfer energy from one point to another without any transfer of matter.
Oscillation
A complete to-and-fro motion from one extreme position to the other extreme position, and back.
Crest
The highest point of a transverse wave
Trough
The lowest point of a transverse wave
Wavefront
An imaginary line joining all points on the waves that are in phase.
Any two points are in phase when they
- move in the same direction
- have the same speed and displacement from their rest position
Any two points are in phase when they
- move in the same direction
- have the same speed and displacement from their rest position
Wavelength
The shortest distance between 2 points in phase on a wave.
Amplitude
The maximum displacement of a particle from the rest position in a wave.
Period
The time taken for one complete oscillation.
Frequency
Number of complete oscillations per unit time
Transverse wave
A wave where the direction of vibration of the particles is perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave.
Longitudinal waves
A wave where the direction of vibration of the particles is parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave.
Compression
Places in the longitudinal wave where air pressure is slightly high than the surrounding air pressure.
Rarefaction
Places in the longitudinal wave where air pressure is slightly lower than the surronding air pressure.
