Soul, Mind + Body - Aquinas & Anscombe Flashcards
Anscombe
developed Aquinas’ view
says “The soul is not me, It is the principle of life”
just as Aristotle says …
- my life needs the body to be animated
- the soul is not material and should be understood as the mind
- it is not something separate from it
- the body is necessary for me to be
our actions do not explain actually what we are doing
So if we use the idea of pointing
Imagine if I point at the king on a chess board, my bodily action is simply a gesture
I may say I am pointing at the King but this only describes how it is working but not why we are pointing .
To get the full picture, we need to know why we are pointing
the act of “man qua spirit”
the act of human as a whole
the action is not possible without a body
a disembodied soul could not point
it is my body that points, i need both and this bodily act, she calls
and act of “man qua spirit”: the act of humans as a whole
