- Common Grace
a. Undeserved beneficence of God expressed by his general care of creation with discrimination
- Special Grace
a. The benefit of God as Redeemer that effectually imparts salvation. The fountainhead of all redemptive blessings.
- Pelagianism
a. Human will enters the world under no predetermined disposition to sin
b. Condemned by the Council of Ephesus in 431
- Semi Pelagianism
a. Faith begins independently of God’s grace, but such grace is subsequently necessary for salvation
b. Condemned at Council of Orange in 529
- The Bondage of the Will
a. Through Adam humanity has received a totally corrupt sin nature both morally and spiritually unable to exercise free will in favor of God or salvation. Humans have a free will only to sin. Gods special grace is required to enable us to respond to the gospel with repentance and faith.
- Ordo Salutis
a. The logical outworking of salvation
- Conditional Election
a. God predestines elects a person to be saved bc in his foreknowledge he sees that he or she will choose in favor of the gospel
- Unconditional Election
a. God’s foreknowledge is his knowledge of persons whom he has chosen by his grace to be saved not based on any future decision or merit
- Corporate Election
a. God’s election of an ethnic people set apart from the rest of humanity whom he will be their God and they shall be his covenant people. Israel and the church two big examples
- Outward call
a. The proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ as a summons to the nations to bring about the obedience of faith
- Effectual (Inward) Call
a. The inner work of the Holy Spirit to illumine the hearts of people as they hear the gospel to grant repentance and faith leading to conversion
- Triune Calling
a. The Father preaches, the Son is preached, and the Spirit is the inner preacher who illumines the understanding and inclines the will to receive him
b. The Father is the caller, Christ is the one called about, Holy Spirit is the effecter of the call
Conversion
- A person’s active and obedient response to the gospel
Regeneration
- Refers to the life giving work of the Holy Spirit to bring about new birth
Union with Christ
- The bond where redeemed sinners are united with Christ by faith thereby imputing the benefits of the person and work of Jesus
- This is a mystical union
- It is a legal union
- It is vital and organic union
- It is trinitarian
