Pneumatology Flashcards
Trinitarian Doctrinal Development can be achieved by:
- Descriptions of the Spirit’s Divine Identity
- Descriptions of the Spirit’s Divine Work
- Included within Divine Worship
Scripture applies to the Spirit divine titles
“Holy” - John 14:26
• “Lord” - 2 Corinthians 3:17
Scripture ascribes functions to the Holy Spirit
Creating (Life-Giving) - John 3:5-6
• Revealer - 1 Cor 2:6-16; 2 Timothy 3:16-17
• Sanctifying - 2 Thess 2:13; 1 Peter 1:2
The Spirit in (Early) Church History - Irenaeus
God’s “Two Hands” in creation and salvation. The Son and the Spirit
The Spirit in (Early) Church History - Tertullian
The Son is begotten (eternal generation) and the Spirit
proceeds (eternal spiration). Different from the
“functional” approach of Irenaeus.
Filioque
From Whom Does the Holy Spirit Proceed?
• The Father only? Or,
• The Father and the Son? (Double Procession)
1054, the Great Schism
The divide between the West (Rome) and the
East (Eastern Orthodoxy) exists still today
Filioque Greek position
The Greek Position (East): to safeguard the unique position
of the Father as the sole source of divinity.
Filioque Latin position
The Latin Position (West): to ensure that the Son and the
Spirit were adequately distinguished “persons,” yet were
shown to be mutually related.
Perichorēsis
meant to describe the mutual indwelling within the Triune Godhead. “The divine essence is shared by each of the three persons of the Trinity in a manner that avoids blurring the distinctions among them.”
ruah
spirit, breath, wind
In OT the Holy Spirit
• Active agent in creation (Gen 1:1-2; Ps 33:6)
• Active agent in sustaining all life (Job 33:4; 34:14-15;
Ps 104:30-32)
• God’s presence in power, revelation, wisdom, and
divine speech (2 Sam 23:2; Prov 2; Prov 8)
The Spirit in the Life of Israel
• The means of God’s EMPOWERMENT for his covenant
people (Judg 3:10; 14:6; 1 Kings 18:12).
• The means by which God endows his covenant people
with SPECIAL GIFTINGS (Ex 28:3; 31:1-6; 35:30-35).
• The means by which God COMMUNICATES his prophetic word, will, and wisdom to his covenant people (Num 11:25-29; 1 Sam 10:10; Micah 3:8; Ezek 11:5-2:5).
The Spirit in Israel’s Hope
Even in the OT, the Spirit’s transformative role amidst
God’s covenant people was messianic at its core.
• The Spirit would be God’s agent for bringing about
the New Covenant promise
1 Timothy 3:16
Great indeed, we confess, is THE MYSTERY OF GODLINESS: He was manifested in the flesh,
VINDICATED BY THE SPIRIT, seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the
world, taken up in glory.”
