Sonnet Test Flashcards
- 14 lines from which a single theme is to be developed.
Popularized first as songs sung by troubadours. - The first 8 lines are arranged in 2 groups of 4 lines
each, aka a quatrain; it is in these lines that the theme
taking the form of a problem is stated and developed. - The function of the octave is all too often given to all 3
quatrains, which state the problem in 3 different ways,
leaving only the couplet to resolve the problem. This
solution often takes the form of an aphorism, a short,
pointed sentence expressing a wise or clever observation
or a general truth. - The last 6 lines are called a sestet, and the problem is
solved here and generally involves a turn of thought.
Octave: theme - presents a
problem
Sestet: provides an answer to the
problem

sonnet 18
Shakespeare uses Sonnet 18 to praise his beloved’s beauty and describe all the ways in which their beauty is preferable to a summer day. The stability of love and its power to immortalize someone is the overarching theme of this poem
