the story of the DeLacey family & Safie
The De Lacey family was in the upper middle class of France, with Felix serving as a civil servant and Agatha who was “ranked with ladies of the highest distinction.” Safie’s father, a Turkish merchant who had been a businessman in Paris for many years (he faced xenophobic) Felix tried to help her father escape n the gov found out and exiled the DeLacey family.
Safie, like the monster, found herself in unenviable circumstances: she was born and raised in a society in which women can find no proper rank, and meet with very little respect. Safie’s mother was a Christian Arab who had been enslaved before being bought and married by Safie’s father, a Turkish merchant. Parisian authorities unjustly persecute Safie’s father, most likely because of his differing religious orientation and foreign manners. Felix had rescued Safie’s father from death in France and had placed her in the protection of a convent of nuns. She arrives in Germany just barely literate. This ultimately leads to Safie’s involvement with the De Lacey family because she wants to see Felix again.
