non-titular view
• Son of Man = poetic. Link with prophet Ezekiel (Ezekiel 2:1, Psalm 8:4)
• Palestinian Aramaic for first personal singular e.g. indirect self reference/humanity in general, including self
o Likely - general statement about humanity
o Problems come with references to future Son of Man, esp. when there is an allusion to Daniel 7:13. Reflects ‘a high level of interpretive activity in early Xian communities’ (180)
titular interpretation
• ‘One like a son of man’ of Daniel 7:13, symbol of suffering Israel
o Dan 7:13, ‘one like son of man’ is ‘merely a symbol of the saints of the Most High… and has no existence in the heavenly world
o 1 Enoch 37-71, heavenly Messiah
o Suffering of the righteous will be followed by vindication and glory
o JC is embodiment of Israel. Son of Man has a purely pictorial function
• “”””””””” but heavenly being
o 1 Enoch 37-71, heavenly figure is compared with human
o Dan 7:13 – heavenly rep of God
o However… this does not explain suffering of Son of Man
• Mark 8:38. Title used by Jesus to allude to one who will come and ‘vindicate his own ministry’ (179)
o Separation between JC on earth and his future role of glory
• ‘Jesus identified himself with the glorious heavenly figure spoken on in Daniel 7 but by it referred to his future glory’
o Most likely interpretation
o JC is Son of Man. Glory is to come but for now, he must suffer
mark son of man sitting at the right hand of power
♣ Mark 14:62, ‘you will see the “son of man” sitting at the right hand of power’
• Links to Dan 7:13
• Political statement. 4 Ezra 11-13, Rev 13, Jewish political discourse
• JC is confirming his role of glory. He will conquer sorrow and sit on a throne with 12 disciplines. Fulfilling image of Daniel (Matt 19:28, Luke 22:30, 1 Cor 6:2)
