Somatosensory System Flashcards
What is Somatosensory function and what are its four main modalities?
The ability to interpret bodily sensations
Mechanical
Thermal
Proprioception
Nociception
What is Proprioception?
An Awareness of position
It allows you to be aware of the position of different parts of your body relative to other parts of your body
What receptors do the Touch and Proprioception modalities utilise?
What can they detect?
Mechanoreceptors
Touch: Light touch, Pressure, Vibration
Proprioception: Joint position, Muscle length, Muscle tension
What receptor do the Thermal and Nociception modalities utilise?
Thermal - Thermoceptors
Nociception - Nociceptors
(Why did I even make this card??)
What is Nociception?
The detection of noxious or potentially damaging stimuli
(not necessarily painful)
