Somatic System disorder Flashcards
Class of psych disorders that are “medically unexplained”
somatic symptom disorders
they cause functional impairment, multiple office visits and medications. symptoms viewed as medical and will not seek psychiatric care
When to suspect Somatic symptom disorder
multiple times seen, atypical response to therapy
Freud found that ____ might be associated with “hysteria” (somatic symptom disorder)
trauma, often sexual abose. idea that an experience could be pathologic
what specialties are affected by somatic syndromes
ALL

What did freud say about conversion disorder and its relationship to trauma
emotional response to trauma is converted over to somatic symptoms when that emotional expression is disallowed
What are qualities of a favorable prognosis of conversion disorder
acute onset, clear stressor, good premorbid function, absence of comorbidity
Other things on the ddx for conversion disorder
psychosomatic, factitious, malingering
could be comorbid with many other psych disorders (MDD, GAD, other psychotic, personality disorders, SUD, PTSD, epilepsy, MS, etc)
Name the psych disorder
A medical sx other than mental disorder is present
psych/behavioral affect medical condition by: course or recovery, interfere with treatment, cause risks, influence underlying pathophys
Psychological factors affecting other medical conditions
examples: anxiety exacerbating asthma, not taking insulin to lose weight
Name the psych disorder
consciously generated sx, without obvious rewards. identified deception
Factitious disorder imposed on self
Name the psych disorder
Conscious generation of sx onto another. individual presents victim to others as ill impaired or injured. no obvious external rewards
Factitious disorder imposed by another (for the perpetrator, not victim)
What are the 3 stages of factitious disorder
1) report sx that are not present
2) false evidence of sx
3) intentional production of sx (injection, use of meds, exacerbation of wounds, thermometer manipulation, urinary tract manipulation, phlebotomy, bruising)
will usually not acknowledge the behavior
