A

Munchausens
* Imposed on self: pt falsifies physical or psychological sxs or induces injury or disease to themselves in the absence of external rewards
* Imposed on another (by proxy): pt presents another as impaired or ill

What is the diagnostic criteria for factitious disorder?

A

falsification of physical or psychological sxs, or induction of injury or disease, a/w identified deception
* Evident even in the absence of obvious external rewards
* Specify: single or recurrent (2+)

How is factitious disorder treated?

A

Conjoint confrontation by the PCP & the psychiatrist
* In factitious disorder imposed on another → children must be removed by CPS

What is the diagnostic criteria for illness anxiety disorder?

A

Preoccupation w/ having or acquiring a serious illness for ≥ 6 months
* Somatic sx are not present or only mild if present
* High level of anxiety about health
* Performs excessive health-related behaviors or exhibits maladaptive behaviors
* Specify: care-seeking type (frequent dr visits, tests, procedures) or care-avoidant type

A

CBT, regular scheduled visits w/ one PCP
* SSRIs if concurrent/underlying anxiety or MDD

A

Chronic condition in which the patient has prominent physical symptoms involving atleast 1 body system but no physical cause found on work up

What is the diagnostic criteria for somatic symptom disorder?

A

≥1 neurological sxs that causes distress & excessive thoughts/feelings/behaviors about the sx for ≥ 6 months

(B) Excessive thoughts/feelings/behaviors about the somatic sxs or health concerns manifested by ≥1 of the following
* Disproportionate & persistent thoughts about the seriousness of the sxs
* Persistently high level of anxiety
* Excessive time/energy devoted to these sxs or health concerns

What is the treatment for somatic symptom disorder?

A

regularly scheduled visits w/ one PCP for monitoring, avoid drugs
* Once pt is ready to work on the root of the problems, group therapy &/or hypnosis
